Stars and celebrities on the street, at gala evenings or in private moments

The best pictures from a body of work of over 100,000 negatives
Southern France, Golden Fifties. The sun laughs, palm trees cast jagged shadows on a gleaming luxury car that slowly comes to a halt in front of the grand hotel and climbs out ... for moments like these, Irish photographer Edward Quinn was the undisputed specialist. Like no other, he explored the social jungle of the Côte d'Azur and captured social and cultural life with a fine sense of humour. At the centre of this reissued, expanded volume are film stars and starlets, gamblers and musicians, magnates and fallen nobility: in fact, the whole variety of characters that made him so special, the Riviera Cocktail. Edward Quinn would have been a hundred years old in 2020.

Edward Quinn

Edward Quinn, born in Dublin in 1920, played Hawaiian guitar in Belfast and then joined the Royal Air Force. When he later came to the Côte d'Azur, he photographed statesmen, glamour girls and playboys as well as celebrities from art, music and literature. His pictures of the still unknown Audrey Hepburn, of Grace Kelly's first meeting with Prince Rainier and of the young Brigitte Bardot are most impressively remembered. He also portrayed Picasso, T. S. Eliot and Gary Cooper. With his sophisticated technique, great patience and much charm, Quinn captured unforgettable moments of the post-war Riviera.
